green v. local

As per class discussion on "green" vs. local design, which do you feel would have more of an impact on our economy / ecology. The move to design green buildings/ products has become a major trend for architects and consumers. Do you think it is even likely that the same will ever be said of designing locally? Do you feel that either green or local design could move past just being a trend and become a standard for all design?

  1. Well, I hope that the use of local materials and services will catch on more in architecture. I think then, the demand will be higher and people will want to build more conscientiously. If the materials we use come from the same area we live, we'll understand the problem more we're facing right now with globalization. Plus, I believe the localization of materials for building construction will be a great step towards the "green" trend we're in. What could be more green than using locally grown, treated, manufactured, and even crafted materials in our building designs? I for one, hope localization catches on.

  2. I agree totally with you that it would be a truely great thing for localization of building materials to catch on. However in this world where everyone just wants the cheapest fastest product available, I don't see any movement like this catching. Although it's great in theory, not many people want to pay more and wait longer, not to mention work harder, for the same products they can already recieve, regardless of where they come from.
